[ Honestly, the sincerity in Zhongli's concern catches Ajax a bit off guard. Failure was failure, after all, and certainly nothing to be coddled over. He can't recall the last time someone had showed encouragement toward him over a mistake. But yeah, — yeah, Zhongli was the type of person who probably encouraged people with kindness and compassion. So it should come as no surprise that he'd be equally kind to Ajax even knowing nothing about what had transpired.
(Maybe if he really knew what Ajax had been trying to do, he wouldn't be so generous.) ]
You're sweeter than any ice cream, Xiansheng. I much prefer to be in your company. So don't too be too generous, yeah? Because I'll definitely take advantage.
[ What was meant to be flirty immediately backfires when Zhongli looks at him like that, however. Dear Archons, his face must be red as his hair at this point and still Zhongli had the audacity to look... what was that anyway? Fond? Ugh. (He's so down bad.)
Ajax's fingers twitch as Zhongli brushes up against them, itching to take Zhongli's hand in his. But he really shouldn't—
No. Why shouldn't he? Who was Ajax to not take every opportunity and embrace it for what it was worth? He wouldn't be where he was today if he was prone to reservation and safety.
So he takes Zhongli's hand, thumb brushing over the lines in his palm. ]
[They may not be as smooth, but they do cause a swell of warmth in Zhongli's chest, his heart skipping a beat at his words' unexpected tenderness and utter earnestness. He watches Ajax's fingers interlace with his own, the touch sending a pleasant shiver down his spine. It's a bold move, but he finds himself welcoming the gesture with a sense of anticipation, his own thumb finding a patch of skin to stroke back. This man, with his brash confidence and genuine charm, has managed to stir something within Zhongli that he hadn't realized was there.]
You're too kind, Ajax, [he replies with a gentle smile, his gaze lingering on Ajax's face for a moment longer than necessary.] But I wouldn't have it any other way.
[He makes to move his leading hand to the waiter, realizes it's the one intertwined with his guest's, and stops in his tracks with a squeeze of his fingers. He uses the other hand instead to turn his attention to the waiter, announcing their decision to indulge in dessert. He will not let go of that hand until the dish is slipped in front of them, and only after he explains how it makes a delicate concoction of sweetened lotus seeds and osmanthus petals, served with a drizzle of honey and a sprinkle of crushed pistachios. Zhongli can't help but steal glances at Ajax even as they eat, a smile as he takes the first bite.
Ah, he had thought that a small crush would have been for his younger, more impetuous years. How dangerous.
When they do leave the restaurant, the cool night air feels crisp against their warmed skin.
(And if the bill wasn't even shown at the table, strange as that is, no one complained. If Ajax protested he would be only met with surprised arched eyebrows as if no one knew what he'd be talking about.)] I hope you enjoyed dinner. It meant a lot to me to share this meal with you.
[ Holding hands with Zhongli like this is nice. The dessert that Zhongli ordered that Childe would not be able to pronounce no matter how hard he tried was nice. Being able to grin at the waiter with wide eyes that practically say "Look at how utterly hot and refined my date is" is nice.
What is less than nice is that Childe is beaten to the bill without even knowing that a battle was being waged. And as sweet as the gesture is, his pride will not stand for it! ]
Xiansheng—
[ His voice is a bit of a petulant whine even as he keeps one hand carefully tucked away in the older man's elbow, letting the both of them wander to the famed night market of Liyue, tucked away at the docks of the Harbor that was said to be the founding part of the city. Liyue, being a central hub of commerce, never slept. And such a phrase was doubly true for the night market.
(Anything and everything could be bought there after all. For the right price and the right client.) ]
It was nice. Really nice. I enjoyed it a lot. But—
C'mon, you have to let me get you something in return. Ah, you even got dessert. I'm much too well-off to be a sugar baby! And I want to spoil you, too.
[Zhongli can't help but chuckle at Ajax's insistence. It's endearing, really, how Ajax refuses to let Zhongli shoulder the burden alone, even in something as simple as paying for dinner when the restaurant is under his Family's wing.] You're very generous, but I assure you, I do not intend to make you a⦠[A pause.] 'Sugar baby', as you say. I have helped the establishment before, hence their allowance of our meal with no charge.
[As they wander through the bustling streets of the night market, Zhongli basks in the sense of familiarity. The sights and sounds of the market are a welcome contrast to the quiet elegance of the restaurant, a reminder of the vibrant energy that pulses through the heart of Liyue Harbor. It's a scene he's appreciated for so long, yet one he hasn't had the time or initiative to explore, even with no business in it.]
It's been quite some time since I've visited the night market, [Zhongli muses, his gaze sweeping over the bustling crowds with a sense of nostalgia.] I must admit, I've missed these streets.
[Despite his retirement from the family business, Zhongli still maintains a keen interest in its affairs. And yet, in moments like these he can't help but feel a sense of freedom, a release from the weight of responsibility that comes with the stepping down of his position.
As they wander through the market, Zhongli finds himself drawn to a stall selling intricately carved jade ornaments. The pieces are exquisite, each one a work of art in its own right. He pauses to admire them, his fingers tracing the smooth surface of a delicate pendant.]
Perhaps we can find something here to commemorate our evening, then? [Zhongli suggests with a smile.]
[ No charge at the Liuli Pavilion. No charge at the Liuli Pavilion! Ajax makes a face— it's hard to say exactly what kind of face. Skeptical that Mr. Zhongli really did walk away from such a prestigious establishment bill-free. Intrigue that perhaps funeral services could be bartered for high-society living (had any of the proprietors of the place died recently?). And just a quirk of amusement that perhaps his solo chess playing crush just might be quite the connected individual in Liyue. Something else to stalk— um, investigate, yeah— investigate when he had a chance.
Ajax is perfectly content to let Zhongli lead them through the stalls, one hand snugly kept in the crook of the older man's elbow as he leans over his shoulder to hum appreciatively at this or that. He cranes his head forward a bit to get a better look at the jade Zhongli is currently touching, wondering idly exactly why that caught his interest over the plethora of other carvings laid out before them. ]
Like matching things? That would be nice. Oh— oh! Or something that can be split into two parts and you keep one half and I keep the other.
[ The shopkeeper, a middle aged Liyuen man dressed in dark blue traditional clothing, swallows a sound at that looking back and forth between the newly arrived "couple". Oh dear me. Oh dear my. Clearing his throat behind one hand, Bolai addresses them with a pleasant if completely customer-service smile.
"You have quite the eye for craftmanship, sir. That piece that has caught your attention is quite the antique, supposedly carved by one of the followers of the Geo Lord many many centuries ago if you believe that such a figure ever existed. Regardless, it is of the highest quality jade, treated expertly by both heat and water."
He takes a step back, hand gesturing widely another selection of his stock. All with price tags that make less "fortunate" customers pale and immediately lose interest.
"However, if you are looking for something meant for two, I have a few items I could show you." ]
I want to see the jewelry.
[ Ajax oh so not helpfully supplies as he pokes at the finely carved spikes of a jade dragon. ]
[Ajax's suggestion of finding something that could be split into two parts, each keeping one half, strikes him in a way that he hadn't expected. It's⦠a romantic notion, one that speaks to a deep connection. Jewelry has always held a special significance in Liyuean tradition, often given as tokens of allegiance or love. To wear another person's adornment is to symbolize a deep connection, a bond that transcends time and space apart.
As Bolai, the shopkeeper, speaks of the piece Zhongli had been admiring, his interest is piqued even further. The idea that it was carved by one of the followers of the Geo Lord centuries ago adds a layer of mystique to the already exquisite piece. He can't help but feel drawn to it, his own familial connection to the Lord of Liyue slipping into the surface of his mind from a strict and devoted upbringing, a sense of reverence washing over him at the thought of owning such a piece of history. But Ajax's request for jewelry brings a smile to Zhongli's lips, a fondness for the young man's enthusiasm evident in his eyes.
To look at the future, or the present, more than the past. Perhaps that's a better alternative.
With a nod, Zhongli gestures for Bolai to show them the selection of jewelry, his eyes scanning the various pieces with a keen eye. He's searching for something that would capture the essence of their relationship, something that would symbolize their connection in a meaningful way.
And then he sees itāa pair of intricately carved jade earrings, one depicting a dragon and the other a phoenix. In Liyuean tradition, the dragon and the phoenix are often seen as symbols of harmony and balance, representing the union of two opposites. They can be worn alone, but placed together, and they click into an entanglement as they are displayed now. It's a fitting choice, Zhongli thinks, even if perhaps too bold in its significance. Maybe Ajax would not know of it and read into it.]
[ Bolai, a merchant who with a straight face has dealt with some of the unruliest and prideful individuals that the Liyue underbelly had to offer, cannot help but form a small 'o' with his mouth as Zhongli points to that specific set of earrings. Surely, the price is something to balk at as are many of his wares — the cost of the jade usually an invitation to see his other merchandise, after all— but this, this was a veritable priceless token of information. And completely unheard of in all the time since the mantle had changed hands to its young (now retired) leader.
"A heart of stone" they had whispered about the new Rex Lapis. Not prone to vices and indulgences like many that had come before him. And yet, here he was doting on this young man (whose bloody reputation also proceeded him). One of the favored of the Ice Queen herself. Surely. Surely, he must be dreaming. He feels faint. Lightheaded almost.
And through it all, Ajax remains oblivious to every distressed thought in Bolai's spinning head. ]
Oh, this is really pretty.
[ Casually, and without asking, Ajax takes the dragon earring and holds it up to the lobe of Zhongli's ear, testing if its magnificence would hold up to Zhongli's. The jade was a darker more purer color than the baubles one might find in the tourist traps of the city proper. And as such, it nicely complimented the vibrant gold of Zhongli's eyes.
Yes, yes. Pretty indeed. ]
I gotta say I'm a little surprised that a scholar like yourself is partial to this kind of thing. But Liyue loves its rocks and dragons. Why should Mr. Zhongli be any different?
[ With one last discerning tilt of his head, Ajax swaps the dragon for the phoenix pressed against Zhongli's ear. He hums a bit to himself, waffling on whether he preferred the symbol of power on display for all to see (hot!) or the elegant and graceful tenacity of the never-dying (also hot!). ]
This one's nice, too. Not often you see this kind of bird in the local wares. And what a power combo, yeah? That which cannot be defeated and that which can never die.
[Zhongli watches with a mix of amusement and fondness as Ajax takes the dragon earring and holds it up to his own ear, distracting him from the glance he throws Bolai for his lack of control over his facial expressions. It's a small thing, but the gesture speaks volumes and draws Zhongli in immediately, the warmth of Childe's hand so close to his face in the crip night breeze.
Zhongli considers Ajax's words for a moment, his gaze drifting to the dragon earring in his hand as he tries the phoenix on him instead. There's a certain allure to the elegant and graceful bird, power in steadfastness, permanence, presence, cycles, changes⦠but the dragon is a symbol of tenacity and resilience that resonates with him on a deep level, and always has. His eyes flicker back to Ajax, the spirited quality that burns within him evident in the playful glint in his eyes.
With a smile, Zhongli takes the dragon earring from Ajax's hand, his fingers lingering for a moment longer than necessary as he places it near Ajax's ear.] I think the dragon should be on you, [he says softly. He meets Ajax's gaze, his own eyes alight with a twinkle.] And I should keep the phoenix. After all, you do have a certain fiery quality to you. And this way, we'll have a memory of this night to carry with us wherever we go.
[He tilts his head, watching the jade contrast with the copper of Ajax's hair. Like a setting sun over a clear pool.] Does that sound agreeable?
[ Ajax cocks his head to the side just so, enough that he can preen a little for Zhongli as the other holds the earring up to his ear. Dragon would not be his first choice for legendary creature dangling from his lobe— but the thought of the cool jade brushing up against his skin as a constant reminder of this gift or the thought that Zhongli might give him a small subtle smile if he were to catch him wearing it—
Well, that was all that Childe needed to be convinced. Convinced to wear it almost every day, in fact. ]
But yeah, yeah. It's agreeable. More than agreeable! Just give me a sec, and I—
[ With practiced ease, he slips his current earring off (a ruby red gem mined from the heart of the frozen nation to the north) and tucks it away into his pocket. The next tilt of his head comes with a very expectant look. ]
Go ahead then and put it on! I'll do the same for you.
[ Ajax grins brightly, almost giddy in how much he was enjoying himself and how much he was enjoying time with a someone who would have been just another stranger not a handful of days ago, but now seemed a complimentary match in every way. How did he manage to get so lucky. But oh— that also reminds him. ]
Oh! And I'll pay for both, of course, Boss!
[ He cheerfully addresses Bolai without ever taking his eyes off Zhongli. ]
[There's a certain charm to Ajax's confidence, a playful energy that draws Zhongli in like a moth to a flame. He can't help but admire the way Ajax carries himself, the easy grace with which he moves through the world. As though such a simple thing carried glory with itself and Ajax stands there as the only one in awe, unapologetic.]
I wouldn't dream of forgetting you either, Ajax, [Zhongli replies softly as he meets Ajax's expectant gaze. With practiced ease, he takes the dragon earring and gently places it on Ajax's ear, his fingers lingering for a moment longer than necessary as he steps just a fraction closer.]
There, [he says softly, his breath ghosting over Ajax's skin as he steps back, admiring the way the jade contrasts against the copper of Ajax's hair. He looks at the earring, fingers tracing and making it dangle from a very boyish lobe. Zhongli smiles, and it's not without its fondness as he admires it and its wearer.] Perfect.
[As Ajax cheerfully addresses Bolai, Zhongli can't help but feel a twinge of guilt at the thought of Ajax paying for both of their earrings.] Ah, I did forget my wallet, considering the particularities of our dinner. So I appreciate it very much. [What a generous offer, one that Zhongli finds himself unable to refuse despite his better judgment. With a bashful smile, he accepts the gift, his eyes casting low as he removes his own earring for Ajax to place the new one instead.
Bolai watches the exchange with a mix of surprise and awe. Here stands Rex Lapis, the well-respected and feared magnate of Liyue's most powerful family, cavorting with Tartaglia, the Vanguard of the Shnezhnayan equivalent. It's a sight that would have been unthinkable not too long agoāor recently. Bolai prides himself in knowing and navigating through the shifting alliances and unspoken tensions that simmer beneath the surface of Liyue's criminal underworld, but he had never thought this would happen right before his stall, before himself.
Rex and Tartaglia stand together in the heart of the night market, surrounded by the sights and sounds of Liyue Harbor, and it feels ritualistic, like a bond forged in the fires of adversity and strengthened by the trials of time has been shaped this evening. Like heralds of doom, or the end of Bolai's world as he knows it.
He's sure this is either a Golden opportunity or Karma would befall him for two thousand years.
Zhongli, meanwhile, tucks a lock of his dark hair behind his ear, and offers it with a tilt of his head as he awaits Ajax to do the same with the counterpart of the pair. ]
[ And Tartaglia, smitten smitten Tartaglia, does not notice the stiffness to which Bolai plucks the card from his hand. Does not hide his exuberance at being allowed to spoil the man that he so thoroughly fancied. Does not even bother to realize he's using his "company card" instead of his personal one, the logo of the Northland Bank emblazoned proudly upon the silver surface.
No, Ajax is much too busy hurriedly fumbling with the earring so that he might hang it from Zhongli's elegant lobe. The gentle care in which he pushes it in rivals the care that he shows his younger brothers and sister while play fighting, fidgeting with it juuuuust enough so that it catches the lantern light just so. The feathered texture pulls at Ajax's with some strange nostalgia, but from where he doesn't know. ]
There. Perfect.
[ A grin stretches wide across Ajax's lips, admiring. ]
How lucky for me that you forgot your wallet.
[ If only Ajax knew—
He half-turns on his heel, tucked up against Zhongli's side again as a blank-faced Bolai hands him back his card. It is a testament to his will that the the shopkeeper does not react to that remark (for his own health and welfare). ]
Shall we see what else the night has in store for us, Mr. Zhongli?
[As Ajax carefully places the earring on Zhongli's ear, he feels a flush of warmth spread across his nape. It's been a long time since he's received a gift so eagerly, and he finds himself bashful under Ajax's enthusiastic gaze. The weight of the earring feels different on his lobe, unfamiliar yet comforting in its presence. He glances at a nearby mirror to see how it looks on him, but he's so quickly distracted by his companion's bright smile that he doesn't even notice the card that Ajax flashes so exuberantly.]
Thank you, Ajax, [he murmurs, proper manners and grace at being offered something with so much meaning behind it, no matter the spontaneity of the moment. He offers Bolai a polite nod.]
Thank you for your assistance, Master Bolai. I wish you a good evening. [The shopkeeper's stiff demeanor is not lost on him. He knows the man is likely shivering to the bone with the realization of who he's dealing with, but Zhongli is not one to flaunt his status. He prefers to keep a low profile, to let his actions speak for themselves. He almost feels guilty.
Even if Bolai himself is counting every recent transaction he made and if it ever not benefited the dragon of Liyue.
With his attention back to Ajax as they make their way through the night market, Zhongli allows himself to truly feel the comforting warmth of the younger man tucked up against his side again, drawn to it more than he should care to admit. He's not used to being treated with such enthusiasm, to being wanted in such a way. He wonders, his thoughts drifting to the younger man in a way that he finds both exhilarating and terrifying if he enjoys this because he likes the attention or because he genuinely enjoys Ajax's company. But then he catches sight of Ajax's profile, the copper strands of his hair catching the warmth of the streetlights, the way that his eyes seem to glimmer, a contrast to how they usually look like darkened depths, as though borrowing from the life of Liyue itself. Zhongli is not accustomed to, the sensation of being wanted, of being cherished. And yet, as he looks down at Ajax's smiling face, he realizes that he could grow used to it, even if it feels like a selfish indulgence.
No, he's not enjoying this because he likes the attention. He's enjoying it because he likes Ajaxālikes the way he fits into the fabric of Liyue, the way he moves with such effortless grace despite his outsider status. There's something undeniably magnetic, something that leaves him wanting more.
So he takes him with a smile to an antique shop, and a traditional toymaker stall allowing the craftsperson to talk shop instead of Zhongli, giving him tips on how to select the proper jade, despite the shopkeeper trying to swindle them. He then tugs Ajax closer, so they can walk along the harbor and the piers, listening to the sailors and the workers as they either prepare to stay the night or an early departure the next morning.]
I hope I am not stealing too much of your time, [Zhongli says after a while when the hullabaloo is muted by the distance.] I wouldn't want you to feel obligated to spend so long away from your family.
[ The rest of the evening is spent in a whirlwind of stalls and booths and lengthy explanations with Ajax hanging on Zhongli's every word. He is perhaps most animated at the toymaker's, absorbing with rapt fascination the centuries old hand-made traditions that have been kept for the simple kites and dolls when mass-produced machinery created the lion's share of the modern market. And even if he did get swindled a bit when Zhongli wasn't looking, Ajax does purchase a bit of jade at well above market value — a plan for later spinning in his head as he tucks it away before the older man can notice.
As they drift along the pier, Ajax catches Zhongli giving him a look more than once though he's not sure exactly what the other is thinking about and can't stare for too long lest he be considered rude.
Has he done something off-putting? Fumbled important Liyuen culture? Have something on his face from one of the sweets he had purchased for the two of them to share (even though Childe's belly was so full from everything he had eaten today).
Ajax is so absorbed in investigating his own behavior under a microscope that the hesitance and doubt in Zhongli's voice catches him completely off guard. And oh, that won't do. That won't do at all! Good thing Ajax was a confidence booster extraordinaire — both for himself and others when the need arose. ]
Now now. Mister Zhongli.
[ Ajax's hands go to smooth the already impeccably starched and flat collar of his coat. The smile that has been there all night still beams up at him even though it is tinged with the promise of a person who is definitely going to have a little fun at someone else's expense. ]
I'm having a great time. One that I'm sure my sweet princess of a little sister will tease me for when I slip back home at this hour. But—! I wouldn't trade it for the world, and I certainly will not have you returning home thinking that you were demanding or a bother when that couldn't be further from the truth.
You're quite the catch, don't you know? Handsome. Well-connected. A perfect gentleman.
[ His hands slide lower down Zhongli's chest and down those abs that were almost making him jealous. Maybe the consultant could give him some tips on this subject, too, later. ]
And ripped! Though why are you hiding that under all these layers of clothes? —No, actually, that's for the best! It makes me feel special to know that I might be one of the few who knows that little secret.
[When Ajax suddenly smooths his collar and beams up at him, Zhongli feels his heart skip a beat. The younger man's touch, the confident yet playful tone of his voice, it's all so...bold. Unaccustomed to such overt affection, Zhongli finds himself feeling shy, a soft flush creeping up his neck and bowing his head. Which is a mistake, as he watches those long fingers slide lower down his chest, brushing against his abdomen. The touch is electric, sending shivers down his spine. Being touched so freely, so eagerly, it takes everything in him to maintain his composure.
Zhongli clears his throat softly, a bashful smile tugging at the corners of his lips as he meets Ajax's gaze.]
You flatter me, Ajax. [His voice is soft, a nervous chuckle preceding a touch of playfulness in his tone despite the shyness that lingers in his eyes.] I'm not accustomed to such bold compliments. But I must admit, it's...refreshing.
After all, you're quite the charmer yourself, [Zhongli continues, his voice softening as he reaches up to gently brush a strand of hair from Ajax's forehead.] Handsome, daring, and full of life. [He gently places a hand over Ajax's, his touch light yet steady, a silent acknowledgment that it's not something he's rejecting.]
I'm glad to hear you're having a great time. I am as well. [His gaze softens, his smile growing warmer.] And as for my layers of clothes, well, perhaps it's a good thing I have you to see through them.
[The words come out more flirtatious than he intended, but Zhongli doesn't mind. It's a new feeling, this ease and warmth, and he finds himself enjoying it more than he expected. He doesn't want Ajax to recoil, doesn't want to lose this newfound connection. Instead, he wants to nurture it, to see where it leads.]
Shall we continue our walk? [He suggests, his voice gentle as he looks out over the harbor.]
[ Oh. Oh. Ajax has certainly caught himself the most adorable man in all of Liyue. The flush of red creeping up his neck (Childe's favorite color!) is quite nice to see not only because Mister Zhongli is very much worthy of such praise but there's a non-trivial amount of satisfaction for Childe in making him blush. There's also quite the little cocky self-assured smile as Childe watches Zhongli's eyes follow the lazy path of his fingers.
(That's right. That's it. All eyes on me~)
Ajax doesn't even pause for a moment as he continues to shamelessly flirt with someone who so shamelessly reciprocated: ]
Well, shame on them— [ Whoever they are ] and all the more for me if no one in this city has tried to flatter you properly. They really dropped the ball on that one. But finders keepers! Because you know, I'd like to see through your clothes any—
[ Wait— wha—
Did Zhongli just imply—? Nah. No, he didn't. It would be unfair for someone so devastatingly handsome to be able to turn the tables on Ajax with such a pleasant and polite tone of voice all while saying that.
Goodness gracious! Mr. Zhongli!
Ajax thoughts are dizzying as Zhongli teases him, reeling him in closer and closer: "Look, we can't go back to my place 'cuz I have little ones at the house and thin walls and you are very very very attractive. So what about your place, hmmm? Take me home. Pretty please take me home."
Bold as he may be though, Ajax is not bold enough to invite himself over that shamelessly on a first date. If the clinging off Zhongli's arm intensified, however— that was just the natural response. What else was a boy with a blooming crush to do? ]
I'd follow you anywhere.
[ Ugh. No, wait. That sounds needy and desperate. Not cool, Ajax. Recover. Recover. ]
I mean— Until morning anyway. Haha~ Then I have to dash away dramatically at dawn's first light until fate grants us its blessing that we may meet again. Or, yanno, until I text you next— whichever comes first.
[Zhongli's heart skips a beat at Ajax's playful yet sincere words, the younger man's thrilling and endearing boldness. He feels a flush of warmth as Ajax clings a bit tighter to his arm. His own shyness feels like a relic of a bygone era, an old habit that he finds himself gently shedding in Ajax's presence. The warmth of Ajax's touch and the sincerity in his eyes make Zhongli feel seen in a way he hasn't in a long time.]
Well, perhaps next time, I'll be the one to text you first, [Zhongli says with a soft chuckle, his gaze meeting Ajax's with a playful glint.] Or maybe we could do something different. Once you've seen to your little ones, I would love for you to meet my dog. He's quite grumpy but friendly. He could use a friend. Maybe Narwhal would enjoy having a companion?
[In the meantime, he continues to guide Ajax through the hidden treasures of the harbor, showing him the nooks and crannies that only a local would know. They explore night salesmen's stalls selling trinkets and decadent snacks, challenging the younger man to try the spicy options, but readily knowing how to douse the heat with a special kind of drink or tea. The air filled with the mingling scents of food and the soft hum of the sound around them is not enough to subdue their conversations.
As they wander, the sky begins to lighten from the deep black of night to a gentle reddish blue, signaling the approaching dawn. The world feels quieter, more intimate as if it belongs only to them in this fleeting moment.
Finally, as they reach a small, secluded spot overlooking the harbor, Zhongli turns to Ajax, his heart full of gratitude and warmth. He squeezes Ajax's hand gently.]
Until next time, [Zhongli murmurs, his voice soft and earnest.] Thank you for a wonderful evening, Ajax. And for your generosity and enthusiasm in indulging someone like myself.
[He meets his gaze, his eyes reflecting the soft glow of the approaching dawn, filled with a depth of emotion that words alone cannot capture.]
Or so Tartaglia thinks as he stumbles home bleary-eyed at dawn's first light to half a dozen missed text messages on his "work" phone. The tone is nothing less than reprimanding as he is given orders to serve petty guard duty at the upcoming meeting between the Fatui and Rex Lapis's Syndicate. He shouldn't be surprised, really. The whole point of taking out the head of the Liyue mafia (or at least someone higher up on the food chain) has been a pivotal part of the Tsaritsa's strategy to gain more bargaining power for a meeting that was already bound to be tense. Or better yet, do away with the meeting altogether with a solid show of the Fatui's might within impenetrable Liyue.
Everyone knew how well that worked out.
And they sure hadn't let Tartgalia forget about his failure for even a fraction of a second.
So the Vanguard found himself once again in the posh, high-end of Liyue's entertainment district (for powerful people like this did not hide in the shadows of black markets and alleyways). Dressed in a silver suit with just the right splashes of maroon, he really did look the role of the Tsarista's blade even if no one outside of the Fatui knew the identity of the 11th Harbinger. He famously wore a mask during missions after all. Not that it mattered when he never let a single survivor (who did not defect to the Fatui) live to tell the tale.
Tartaglia cracks his neck to one side as his hands one again find themselves sliding into his pockets. It's a soothing motion, a tic almost. For starters, it means that his hands are that much closer to his hidden weapons (a knife strapped to his inner wrist and another to his ankle), but also one hand curls around something that he had placed there as a good luck charm. A jade dragon earring wrapped up protectively so it wouldn't get scratched or scuffed but still recognizable as his fingers trace over the ridges and edges in a strange ritual of comfort. (It'd be too risky to wear a symbol of Rex Lapis so openly after his failure, even if two events had nothing to do with one another.)
His idle thoughts snap back to attention as he sees the duo of other Harbingers arrive precisely and pointedly ten minutes late for the engagement— Regrator and the Fair Lady. Dressed in opulent finery that can almost be called aggressive, they make their way to a well-guarded room where surely Rex Lapis's own officials must be waiting for them. Nonchalantly, Tartaglia circles the edge of the venue all small talk and charisma and a smile that does not reach his eyes as he puts himself into position.
[ Ajax looks positively giddy with the thought that Zhongli might text him first. Maybe he should be a polite boy and be patient so he can roll around in the serotonin hit that is sure to come with Zhongli's name appearing on his locked screen. What a pleasant surprise that would be! ]
I'd love to meet your dog. Narwhal already adores you, the little traitor, and probably needs friends his own uh... haha, species?
[ The rest of the night is an enjoyable blur of activities— Ajax vividly remembers bragging about how he could handle his spice before Zhongli soothed his sore ego with specialty drink after specialty drink. Oh, he'd have to train himself to handle it. Maybe it was like building any other muscle by exposing yourself to harsher and harsher spices until one day he'd be able to down even the spiciest of Liyue food with a smile. How impressed would Mr. Zhongli be then!
Ah, but all good things come to an end, and Ajax feels Zhongli squeeze his hand and bid him a soft and tender farewell that makes his heart clench. For a moment, he stands there transfixed, the warmth of their touch warming his heart as he leans in and—
Rests his forehead against Zhongli's with a soft smile of his own. ]
Me, too, Mister Zhongli. Don't be a stranger, okay?
[ He can feel the heat rising in his cheeks and his impulses screaming at him as he uncharacteristically denies them to ensure a proper first date farewell for his very handsome and very proper first date. ]
[For the next day or so, Zhongli finds his thoughts drifting back to the night spent with Ajax. The warmth of their conversations, the playful banter, and the unexpected but delightful touches, all linger in his mind like a comforting presence. The memories of the jade earrings, how Ajax's eyes lit up with excitement, and how his own heart had fluttered at the younger man's touch, are all vivid, and Zhongli finds himself cherishing them.
Yet, a curiosity blooms at the back of his mind. The sight of Ajax in the recordings from the previous event nags at him. Was he lost? Was it a mere coincidence? Could the toy-making industry be so prominent that it warranted Ajax's presence there in such an event? Or was the company he worked for involved in other types of businesses? The questions swirl in his mind, but he pushes them aside, focusing on the fond memories instead.
However, the peaceful moments of reminiscing are disrupted by the buzz of rumors spreading through Liyue Harbor. Whispers of two major elements from opposing sides seen cavorting together in the most scandalous of ways ripple through the streets, the rumor mill churning relentlessly. No one can tell him about the source, but the rumors seem to have started in the night market, for no good reason. His presence is requested at an upcoming meeting between the Adepti and the Fatui, despite his retirement, to oversee firsthand what the discussion would be about and to reassure that there would be no betrayals from the Adepti themselves.
Zhongli is not particularly concerned. Rumors are just thatārumors. They aim to stir people's hearts when things get threatened. And the Fatui have been an insistent force, trying to rattle the Syndicate. They may as well have started to spread a rumor to instill suspicion from within. He prepares himself, assuming the role of a consultant to the Adepti, a figure with immense knowledge of history both documented and not. His disguise is simple yet effective, allowing him to blend in while standing behind a lattice panel near the bar and kitchen, meticulously preparing tea. From this vantage point, he can overhear the conversation without raising any suspicion.
The heads of the Syndicate have delegated the task of negotiating with the Fatui to the younger members of the leadership, a power move in itself. Madame Ping, Xianyun, and albeit not a part of the adepti, but still a relevant member and stakeholder, the Tinquan Ningguang, are notably absent, their absence a statement of the perceived insignificance of the Fatui representatives. Instead, it is the newer leaders who sit at the table, Yanfei, Ganyu, and Keqing, facing off against Regrator and Signora with composed expressions and sharp minds.
Zhongli's attention is focused on the tea preparations rather than the Fatui forces mingling with Syndicate members and interested parties alike across the whole room, his movements precise and deliberate. Yet, his ears are attuned to the conversation unfolding at the table in the corner.]
[ The twist of Signora's lips (terrible diplomat that she is) gives away her obvious displeasure at meeting with such lessers, but Regrator's pleasant (if obviously fake) customer service smile is hopefully enough to smooth out a little of her rough edges. He starts with pleasantries and gifts of fur from Snezhnaya as a way to break tension between the two parties.
"Why, after all, would it not be more profitable for everyone if the Fatui and the esteemed Adepti were mutually beneficial partners instead of at each other throats?"
It's a feint and it is flattery for the most part as then discussions open up to such things as territory (taken by force and blood and mora slipped into the palms of powerful people) and safe passage. The offers are aggressive just barely toeing the line of insulting — a plan devised and hastily edited when they had calculated the loss of any significant figure of Rex Lapis's organization under their belt. It has no hopes of success but Regrator is a known risk taker and La Signora is prideful. Best to be talked down from a lofty perch than be seen as an underdog begging for scraps.
Which is to say that Childe tunes most of it out within the first few minutes. Booooooring~
But like a good little Vanguard, Childe hovers near the entourage — not close enough to cause a stir of another person sitting at the table, but close enough to get on the action is this whole endeavor turned out to be more interesting than slithering wordplay and compromising over useless baubles. ]
[Zhongli continues his meticulous tea preparations, movements deliberate and precise. The tea he has chosen for this occasion is a simple Chenyu blend, designed to calm the nerves and brighten the mind. It's a subtle reminder that Liyue's most prominent family does not resort to intimidation or rudeness but rather leads by example, treating every collaborator, and even potential adversaries, with respect and grace. The tea is carefully brewed to perfection, each cup a small gesture of hospitality.
He gestures for the tea to be served, ensuring that each guest receives a cup with the utmost attention. The young leaders accept the gifts with grace and explain what the staff is bringing them in return. Zhongli had warned them that Regrator enjoyed showing off his deep pockets (his financial power) with lavish gifts. It is only fair to reciprocate, not just to the Harbingers themselves but to the entire entourage.
As the tea is served, each cup is accompanied by a small token of appreciation. A single gold collector's Mora coin for Regrator, a beautiful hairpin for La Signora, and small, exquisite trinkets for the agents around Childe. On Childe's tray, however, is a pair of chopsticksāa subtle and symbolic gesture. The chopsticks, intricately carved, are a welcoming gift, signifying the potential for a prosperous relationship with the youngest of the Harbingers, an invitation to immerse himself in the culture of Liyue.
Zhongli sips his cup of tea, his demeanor calm and composed as he listens to the ongoing conversation. Yanfei, with her characteristic poise, thanks the staff for the tea, sips at it carefully (to show it's not poisoned), and clears her throat before speaking. Her voice is clear and steady, a testament to her confidence and training.
"While we acknowledge the potential benefits of our collaboration, it is imperative that we address the overreaching presence of the Fatui in our region. Certain contracts have been breached, and this goes against the very foundation of our family's business. Trustworthiness and adherence to agreements are paramount if we are to move forward."
Keqing speaks up, her voice crisp and clear.:
"We need concrete assurances that the Fatui will honor their commitments and respect the sovereignty of Liyue. Only then can we discuss a truly beneficial partnership."
"We seek a partnership based on mutual respect and adherence to agreed terms," Yanfei continues. "Our contracts are and have always been the foundation of trust and cooperation. We hope that the Fatui can demonstrate their commitment to these principles."]
[ Regrator is perhaps a bit longwinded in his praise of the received gifts and the craftsmanship of the tea, prone to long drawling conversations that can show off his knowledge. He is polite and poised in his response, taking stage in the land of commerce (his home turf on many levels) in lieu of La Signora's more aggressive tactics.
"The Fatui have no interest in encroaching on the sovereignty of Liyue." Puppet governments are so useful after all. "It is our sincere regret if that is what appears to be the outcome of our business negotiations."
Tartaglia, on the other hand, spares a few moments to pick up the intricate pair of chopsticks, marveling at their beauty. He holds them carefully between his fingers just as Mr. Zhongli taught him, the lacquered and gilded finish making the movement smooth and fluid. This is a expensive gift, which means that perhaps the Fatui are making more progress into Liyue than he first had thought. After all, such finery would not be wasted on those not worthy to sit at the table. Rex Lapis's people either mean to acknowledge them as equals or flaunt their wealth in an act of intimidation. A victory indeed for Her Majesty.
Pantalone continues, fingers laced carefully in front of him and with a feigned air of confusion at the accusations.
"Might you inform us of how exactly our contracts with your honored family have been breached so that we may best avoid such misunderstandings in the future?"
For Regrator came to this meeting to weave an infuriating web of technicalities. Each aggressive act and overreach explained with a loophole in each contract, honoring only the words agreed to but not the spirit. He (and other like-minded Harbingers) had spent months scouring each and every document, finding the weakest links among them (those not penned by Rex Lapis's hand or any of his most trusted advisors). It was a gambit that surely could work only once in the Land of Contracts, but a well paid off one if it had already afforded them a meeting such as this, junior members of Rex Lapis's family or not.
"It is, after all, quite the heavy accusation that you are laying down against us." ]
[As Yanfei speaks, she brings forth a massive tome, setting it on the table with a resolute thud. The book is dog-eared and heavily annotated, having been submitted to meticulous scrutiny. She opens it to a specific section, her eyes meeting Regrator's with a composed intensity.
"Oh, no, we're not accusing. We are merely expressing our concerns, considering you may not be aware of how we do things here in Liyue. We have documented instances where the contracts have been breached. We appreciate your business and understand that there are learning curves as we navigate without the direct assistance of our elders. However, these breaches have given us the opportunity to create new addendums that address these issues and ensure the integrity of our agreements moving forward."
She flips through the pages, highlighting several breaches noted in the tome. "We recognize that there have been contracts with some openings, but this provides us a chance to solidify the terms of our future engagements, which, as you know there are plenty. This is why it is essential that we establish clear and mutually beneficial guidelines, especially given the numerous new contracts awaiting approval. I'm sure you understand?"
Ganyu steps in, her voice calm and firm. "We have not imposed any of the protocoled fines on the Fatui thus far, assuming no ill intent on your part. However, it is important to note that the cumulative fine cost for these breaches amounts to a significant sum." She mentions an exorbitant amount of Mora, the weight of it hanging in the air and making some people in the entourage swallow something hard in their throat. "We are willing to cooperate and move forward, but as you understand, we cannot withhold our own due diligence in the next negotiations. It would not be fair to play favorites if we face our other collaborators, and we're sure it's in both our best interests that we keep things by the book."
Zhongli maneuvers himself through the corridors around the room, covered by lattice panels, his movements unobtrusive. He hears an agent's voice, laced with a mocking tone, "Yeah, we're sure to keep your 'interest' in more ways than one, from what we hear on the streets."
The young leaders clear their throats, choosing to ignore the dig and maintain their composure. Zhongli, however, does not let the comment pass unnoticed. He sends a subtle signal to a waiter, who places a reassuring hand on the shoulder of a Millelith enforcer sitting at another table and already patting their waist, searching for a weapon that had been left in the lobby as per meeting policy. The enforcer relaxes slightly, the tension easing from their posture.
Zhongli remains calm. The infamous Liyuen trap is setāpull at its foundations, and it will trap you further. He's very curious as to what comes next.]
[ Regrator spreads his hands out wide, placating if not for the feigned ignorance in his tone.
"Lady Yanfei, you have quite the silver tongue but I'm afraid you have me more than a little confused. I most assuredly agree that if you find our actions unfavorable then we should clarify future endeavors so that they be acceptable to both our parties.
However, those current infractures— I call them that for convenience though I will not admit fault for things not yet negotiated— are not present in the current contract, correct? Else we would have no need for addendums. Yet you speak of fines and breaches as if these were concrete things. So might I ask again and ask that you answer plainly— are you accusing us of breaching the contracts as they currently stand?"
It's a half-bluff, of course. With all the moving pieces and fine print, surely somewhere the Fatui have slipped up and caused an actual infraction. But then, that is the point of this meeting, is it not? To box in the opposite side until their back is against the wall and see what they due in times of distress.
For it would be a heavy accusation to accuse the Fatui of breaching the contract (even though they have). But also perhaps they are just looking for blood in the water as the Harbingers' entourage straightens up at Regrator's words as if to seem the more imposing force. La Signora's confident smile only adds to the tension in the air as she idly twirls a lock of platinum hair around a finger.
"Yes. It's hard to imagine that you're acting in good faith as you wave around fines with that many zeroes. We're not the kind of paupers that get cowed regarding such trivial matters."
At this, Tartaglia finally looks up from his gift, tucking the ornate wooden box into his coat for safekeeping. Oh? Maybe things would finally get a bit more interesting after all. That's the thing about working with the Fair Lady. She always has to get the last word in. And while Tartaglia would trust her as far as he could throw her, it at least meant that these talks could always end up— well, interesting is one way to put it. ]
["Oh no, Lord Regrator, there's no change to the contracts that the Fatui have so diligently explored and highlighted. Those are of no consequence to the Adepti's major operations, after all." Yanfei's smile is polite but carries a hint of steel. "We do want to thank you for your diligence. It's certainly inspiring enough for us to bring our A-game to the tableā"
āand then, something shatters.
Porcelain, but also the air in the room.
Zhongli suddenly hears a loud clatter from behind the lattice panel. The sound startles him, and he senses the already tense atmosphere in the room snap into a wildfire. In an instant, the room erupts into chaos as both Fatui agents and Millelith enforcers jump into action. Some rush to get in front of the Adepti, others move to protect the Harbingers, and still others start to throw punches.
The air is filled with the sounds of scuffling, grunts, and shouts as the situation spirals out of control. Zhongli remains calm, but he knows he needs to make a hasty retreat. The delicate balance of the meeting has been shattered, and staying any longer would be unwise.
Zhongli slips quietly through the corridors, using his intimate knowledge of the venue's layout to avoid the escalating conflict. He moves swiftly and silently, ensuring he remains unseen as he navigates his way outā
ā"There he is! Get him!"
Ah. Well.
The agents charge at him with swift, precise movements, their intent clear. Body moving instinctively into a defensive stance, he knows that engaging in a prolonged fight would draw unwanted attention, so he needs to end this quickly.
The first agent lunges with a dagger, aiming for Zhongli's chest. He sidesteps effortlessly, grabs the agent's wrist, twisting it sharply, and disarms him with a flick of his wrist. The dagger clatters to the ground, and Zhongli delivers a swift, disabling blow to the agent's midsection, causing him to crumple to the floor.
The second agent, seeing his comrade fall, hesitates for a split second before drawing brass knuckles into his fist. So they had somehow slipped past the search at the entrance. Perhaps he'll save a note to the owners of the establishment later about how disappointing that is. He swipes at Zhongli with a fierce determination, but Zhongli's reflexes are honed by years of experience. With a swift, calculated motion, he sweeps the agent's legs out from under him, sending him crashing to the ground.]
Vexing. [He mutters as he moves past the agents into the next corridor. He doesn't enjoy this kind of thing at all; not anymore, anyway.]
