So why he is where he is when he's been injured and actually cornered doesn't really register to him. His pursuers are ever relentless, and he can no longer tell what they even are any longer, but a best guess is they are experiments just like him. If they have the power of the Abyss or just something like dark gods' lingering hatred used as a superhuman drug, he's not sure, but they definitely can keep up with him when other humans would never be able to.
As for Ajax's injuries, they may or may not be from the enemy, but either way they've got him running out of options to do anything other than kill. ]
I'd keep your distance if I were you unless you want to end up just like me.
[ as if on cue to demonstrate, he coughs violently, bringing his hand to cover his mouth as blood starts spilling from between his fingers and the sides of his hand. When he drags his hand away , wiping the blood, his hand also drops something soaked in blood— petals and the head of a flower that resembles red spider lilies. it drops into the soil in a pool of blood, and it does cause the pursuers to hesitate. ]
What, not here just to drag me back for this stupid thing? That's surprising.
[ it's really not, but he can't let them sense how much struggling he's doing to keep up appearances, especially when they still seem to have some instinct of survival rather than modified to be mindless killing machines. If he fights and kill them now, this parasite they forced on him will only thrive further. He doesn't want to taint this land with it if he can avoid it.
...I really feel like I could use some help right now. First time for everything. ]
Get back, you damn cowards. Or stop wasting time and come at me already. Even I like to have some time to myself here and there without someone up my ass.
[ the Abyss infused hydro swirls about his hand before turning into a blade that he grips tightly with his bloodied hand, holding it defensively. ]

Really, Rex Lapis should throw him out for stalking the young woman still in his care. But he never gets close to her (Azhdaha makes sure of that), and in the warrior's copious spare time he has handled more than one monster or remnant of a dead god that the Archon would have had to call upon his Adepti for. Rex Lapis watches from the shadows then, ready to intervene should the young warrior be overwhelmed. But he never is. Nor does he acknowledge the Geo Archon's presence.
And so the two of them pass each silently like ships in the night.
Until today. When the mortal's injuries are too severe to ignore. And regardless the reason, Zhongli cannot ignore a man injured wearing that face. It brings him back to that storm so many centuries ago, where Ajax surely would have perished if he had not intervened.
Rex Lapis keeps his distance, but openly makes his presence known all the same. He doesn't want to startle the man into doing something foolish. ]
I am not here to drag you back anywhere.
[ Zhongli's eyes drift to the blood spattered across the man's clothes, the petals that fall from his lips (ah, did this man's heart belong to another), and the hydro blade gripped tightly in his hand. How resilient he must be, to handle his element when injured so gravely. ]
On the contrary, asylum is provided to all that seek it in Liyue. So I am here to offer you shelter and rest if you wish to take it.
no subject
There's no one else— is he hallucinating, maybe then? ]
...I'm in Liyue again? [ did he subconsciously run here rather than 'home', or whatever was as close to what that word truly meant. ]
no subject
Come.
[ And he offers a hand out to the man, basalt fingers tinged with gold geometric lines running up the length of his arm and disappearing under the whites and gold of his robes. ]
You are injured such that it is taking a toll on both your body and mind. It is not safe for you to remain here.
[ Not for the man and not for who he might attack in his defensive state. ]
no subject
Biting his lower lip, Ajax finally reached out with his unbloodied hand even as the hydro weapon deconstructs and disappears. ]
...Okay.

Meanwhile, Rex Lapis's steps are slow and steady as they navigate the canopy of sandalwood trees before descending stone steps into a large wide valley. Tall mountains on all sides keep Jeuyen Karst protected from outsiders though one would have to be incredibly foolish (or disoriented like Ajax) to stumble into the domain of the Adepti.
Once they've made their way to the very lowest part of the valley, Morax leads the injured man to a large body of water, stretching to almost the edge of the mountains yet shallow for its massive width. He brings him to rest under the golden leaves of a mature ginkgo tree. ]
Rest here. And I shall tend to your wounds.
no subject
So he lets the geo archon lead him until suddenly he realizes he has been guided to sit under the tree. There's a nervous chuckle at him talking about taking care of his wounds& mdash; really? The geo archon is going to personally attend to him even after his their first meeting went? ]
Th...anks... I don't think you're able to be infected by this shitty parasite, but be careful all the same. All I really need is some rest, so don't trouble yourself unless you really want to for some reason.
no subject
[ Rex Lapis crouches in front of him, managing to make the position regal and elegant even as he crosses his wrists over one knee. ]
You are injured and in my domain. And I am certain you have seen me kept watch as you have slaughtered creatures in my domain even if it was only for your own purposes. Those actions protected the people of Liyue all the same.
In the honor of fairness, Liyue can take care of you in the same manner until you can be on your way.
no subject
He shrugs slightly in reply, not trying to argue with the other about his offer, instead just sinking further beneath the hood of his cloak as he goes to lift it back over his head. ]
...I'll stay here, then.
no subject
[ Taking the gesture as both an affirmation and a request for conversation to be kept to a minimum (something that Rex Lapis was well versed in his less social adepti), he kneels down next to the young man and gets to work.
The wounds are washed with the pure (and perhaps stinging waters of Jueyun Karst), dried, and then covered in an ointment mixed from qingxin, violet grass and mist flower corolla before being bandaged in gauze made from silkflowers. There is nothing Rex Lapis can do regarding the miasma and other dark energy that leaks from the wounds. Nor for any petals that are coughed up during the process. ]
no subject
He does cough a few times, but he is quick to turn away from Morax and cough into his hand before wiping his hand rather sullenly on the grass next to him to remove the blood and wet petals.
One thing he realizes is that this feeling makes him... homesick. He doesn't know where home would be, though. He also never recalls anyone tending to him like this, so what gives...? ]
no subject
I can prepare a tea for the cough, but it will only ease the scratching of your throat. You best have a trained healer have a closer look.
[ Something stirs within his stone heart (faint as all things at are not logical and agreed upon contracts are this day). It is not quite pity. Grief for certain as such was a disease he would not wish upon anyone.
Grief... and something more. ]
no subject
If the most powerful of the archons can't do anything about it, how can a trained healer?
[ he is teaching, though, a small smile tilting the curves of his mouth upward. ] Just messing with you.
Unfortunately... There's no healer or doctor that can do anything about it. And the ones in Snezhnaya don't even know what it is.
... Not to mention, I'm pretty sure they are the ones that caused this anyway through their experiments. So they won't do anything about it unless they want to for some reason; and then I have no choice if I'm caught.
[ a small beat of silence is followed by:]
Tea would be really nice, though. Thanks.
no subject
Ah.
Perhaps he should try a bit more to keep him here under the protection of Liyue. Like with young Xiao, he senses a code of honor buried underneath the agitated demeanor and blood on his hands.
The two of them may not be so different after all. ]
It sounds like you current — master — I believe you said before... does not treat you very well.
no subject
I don't really remember, I was pretty young. [ he says it as if he isn't still young now. ]
But I think it's pretty common in humans with power that other humans are just numbers to use to get to the top. [ basically, what does he really have to complain about here, even if he's throwing up blood and flowers which is absolutely not normal. ]
Anyway, I just want it to calm down to stop being so difficult to deal with in every day life, that's enough for me. I don't need to be treated well by anyone else.
no subject
[ If any of that is supposed to paint the situation in a more favorable light, it fails to do so. And while it is true that humans left to their own devices can default to developing a class hierarchy, that is a very pessimistic view of the world. People should form a community, augmenting each other passions and skills to create a unified and cohesive whole. Rex Lapis hopes that Liyue stands to be an example of such a place.
But the young man is obviously from a less fortunate and more troubled place.
Best to let him be for now. And honor his wish (as gods are wont to do) — to try and ease the symptoms of his illness. ]
Then please rest for a moment.
I shall return with the tea.
no subject
...He guesses it's possible. ]
no subject
Honestly, Zhongli doesn't even know if he will still be there upon his return.
But he finds Ajax still slumped up against the tree when he approaches. He takes a seat next to him, not close enough to touch and sets down a gilded tray made of mora with a fine stone teapot and two matching square cups. The tea smells distinctly herbal, and when drunk, will slightly numb the throat with a very distinctive flowery aftertaste.
Before he allows the other man to drink though, Rex Lapis takes a handkerchief rom his pockets and carefully wipes away the blood and other bits of gore around the man's mouth. ]
Please. Make yourself at home.
None of your enemies can reach you here. And provided you do not provoke anyone, no one here shall harm you either.

For a split second as he looks to Rex Lapis at that word, he hears the distinct echo of perhaps what would be the archon if he were distraught—
{ ███████ never ████████ home. Why ██████ }
The sound is unsettling enough as a stranger to the person struggling with their words, but when he looks to Rex Lapis, he hesitates a moment as a vision flickers into his line of sight (but all he can make out is a silhouette.) it's gone just as quickly, but the lost sounding tone of that voice stays with him, a sudden pain echoing in his chest like he can't remember ever feeling before and—
Guilt. Guilt because why did he insist on not going home? Why did he do what he did to leave this person like this? Except he never remembers it ever happening (and yet the feelings in his chest are very real—)
Ajax blinks, coming back to his senses. He'll take the tea, embarrassed for his sudden hesitation and how it might have come off just now (like he's ungrateful or someone, but why does he even care about that suddenly?) Staring down hard at the streaming liquid, he focuses to steady his hands and swallow the sudden upset. He's never cared about anyone and their emotional reactions before, why is a detailess silhouette and broken set of words having him feeling so out of sorts? He should probably say something so Rex Lapis doesn't think this has anything to do with what he's doing to cater to Ajax right now.
Of course, what he suddenly blurts out isn't what he planned at all, and he immediately bites his tongue, but it's a little too late to interrupt himself. ]
Do we know each other from somewhere?
[ Wait, no, that's not right. Even if that voice belonged to the geo archon it didn't have anything to do with Ajax. Maybe it's just a lost memory of someone else that he's managed to catch wind of. ]
... Uh, I mean... yeah, I don't know where that came from. Not to bring up weird stuff, but do memories freely linger around here like ghosts or some such that you can suddenly just catch wind of if they pass by close enough to you? Is that a thing that ever happens here... or anything? [ he'll finally go to drink the tea while doing his best not to spill it or get worked up enough where he starts choking again. Maybe... maybe he's in worse shape than he thought getting spooked by such a little thing. ]
no subject
(No. They do not know each other from anywhere. Ajax is long gone. And even if by some miracle, a piece of his Ajax lived within this person, well— he was not Morax's any longer. He deserved to live his own life without his influence hanging over him like a cloud, depriving this life of his freedom.
Their love had not been strong enough, after all. Strong enough to bring Ajax home.) ]
The lands of Liyue — like all of Teyvat — are criss-crossed with many powerful Ley Lines. Energies of being long since past. Some attract monsters, some protect treasures, and some allow up a brief glimpse into the memories of those that walked before us.
[ Even if Morax knows there are no Ley Lines in this particular sanctuary. Otherwise, Azhdaha would never leave this place as such energies draw him in like a cat to catnip. Nor would Morax have this man rest in such a place with his energy signature already so volatile. ]
no subject
(would they having had met somewhere once before have been the answer to the something that's been missing from him? Really most likely... no.)
Ajax blinks again, looking at that smile, and that guilt feels stronger. It doesn't get any clearer, though. Doesn't understand how it would do anything for either of them. Afterall, Ajax had already said it. They would never see eye to eye, nevermind get along well enough for 'home' for one of them being around the other.
(But he has no home. Everyone is supposed to have a home, aren't they?) ]
Ah, yeah... that makes sense. [ he closes his eyes, bringing a one hand up to almost clutch at his covered eye, thoughtful.
Even if... somehow they did know each, if there really was a home for Ajax, well... wouldn't that just be particularly cruel to crack wide open? A home will not change the Abyss Flower's parasitic grip, and it's not something he imagined an archon can do easily erase it or humans wouldn't find it so morbidly intriguing for its godlike abilities.
his expression droops in rare resignation before he wipes it clean from his expression, forcing a small smile. it's clear that Ajax doesn't smile often— it's almost as if he's only capable of doing it because he's practiced it so many times rather than capable of feeling something that would cause it as a response to anything. ]
It was a happy memory, most likely. I didn't see much of it, but it gives me the impression your reputation is perhaps not so inflated. Afterall, being able to balance ruthlessness and power with nurturing and care as well as judgement and wisdom is pretty tall order, even for a god.
[ he tells his lie so flawlessly, like it's the most natural thing in the world even if it's impossible to be true with how Ajax had initially reacted.
It wasn't happy at all. The feeling was awful. Talking about it would make a stranger feel awkward at best, so if it really was a memory to someone Rex Lapis potentially knew... ]
Anyway. [ The owner felt not only guilty, but lost and unsure how to find their way back .... back... ]
...Home, huh. Well, thanks for the invitation, I'll try not be too rude of a guest. But, I have never had a home so if I'm doing it wrong, you probably should correct me, aha.
Regardless, I won't outstay my welcome and will make sure to recover quickly. [ he glances to the bloody mess next to him. At least if he's here Morax will be able to deal with the Abyss Flower rearing its head. So, yeah, this is most definitely probably the place to spend what limited time is left. ]
no subject
But back to the matter at hand, that information was best kept close to his chest (to use only if needed) while tending to Ajax's more immediate needs. Restoring the man's health was paramount. Everything else (as complicated as it would probably turn out to be) could come later. ]
I do not believe there is a way to do a home incorrectly unless one means to destroy it.
[ Which this man will not be able to do (Abyssal power or no) so that is a moot point. ]
This sanctuary is here for as long as you need it. Do not feel rushed.
[ And with that, Rex Lapis bows his head politely before getting up and moving nearby to where his "office" is. That is to say, a large stack of scrolls that require his attention as the ruler of Liyue. The population of the harbor was still small, mostly survivors from the Guili Assembly and those whose gods had fallen during the Archon Wars, but still there was work to be done.
He does not bother with keeping tabs on Ajax for the earth will tell him where he is and if he needs assistance. It will also tell him if the man needs to more thoroughly watched (if he goes after Lumine again) but with his current injuries as they are, the Archon does not see that happening anytime in the foreseeable future. ]
no subject
It's not like he can expect the Archon of Contracts to be a social butterfly and know what and what not to say to make his "guest" feel as truly welcome in this place as he seems(?) to want to convey. (Of course, in reality there is nothing he could ever say to do such a thing, anyway. Ajax is an outsider and he will never be accepted no matter what the geo archon claims. If the rest of Liyue gets wind a creature of the Abyss is being allowed to stay, even on condition of best behavior, that's not going to fly with any of them. )
The young warrior doesn't bother Rex Lapis from there on out whenever he is "occupied." Yet Ajax also diligently returns to the same spot he was left at whenever he does fully disappear from the area. He disappears within hours that same day despite his injuries and doesn't return until sunrise. What's he gone and done with himself is hard to tell, and he doesn't offer insights. He already knows the geo archon can know where and what he's doing if he wanted. So when Rex Lapis works, Ajax leaves or is silently and obediently under the ginkgo tree. When there, he often stares off at nothing, but there's are some points where he gets a few moments of mercy where he actually is able to fall asleep (and seems to actually sleep without stress and forced apathy of an existence he clearly has thoughts on over himself.) When the ruler of Liyue is gone from the area, Ajax is almost always gone, too.
—Except, slowly but surely there is a small stream of fruits or nuts or something of sustenance left carefully nearby his "office" for the geo archon, just in case. Sometimes, some are fresh tea leaves, carefully picked and handled with care. Maybe it's a few local critters that are doing their best to help their lord stay well in his times of work with good intentions. Who knows.
( Although he has been careful to not disturb the ruler of Liyue, whenever he's been around, Ajax hasn't been able to help himself entirely. His healing process has him restless and bored and more interested in being anywhere in liyue than stuck in one spot. So he gets chatty and invasive even, sometimes—innocently so—only returning to not bothering Rex Lapis when he's metaphorically picked up and settled back behind the play pen gate, tail left wagging hopefully that being patient will get him rewarded with more social interaction. )
Out of respect for the geo lord's efforts of treating his wounds, the mortal is very obedient and stays out of trouble. Trouble will eventually find him, but for now there is none to be found. ]
no subject
The offerings of tea leaves and other various gifts do not go unnoticed. It is perhaps more that Rex Lapis does not know what to do with them. He takes care of himself so he certainly does not need the gifts that Ajax provides. But he is not blind to what Ajax could be implying — a peace offering, a way to pay off his debts, or perhaps even a contribution to this sanctuary to make it more a "home". Even by the most practical definition, Ajax is contributing to this place and his people, and that is all that Rex Lapis has ever needed to fold someone into the contracts of his protection.
So, the Archon repays the favor in kind. Their shared space begins being occupied by items which now belong to Ajax - a cup, a pair of chopsticks, a bowl, a plate, a change of clothes, and first aid implements for his use only when he returns from wherever he wanders to. The last gift is a knife carved and smelt from jade and gold. It's small and versatile — able to be used to fillet fish and clean game and cook if necessary. But it is also sharp enough for defense (and offense) if needed in such a capacity.
Morax presents the blade to Ajax one day as he blinks up at the boughs of the ginkgo tree, certainly not asleep but also not thrumming with some of the anxious energy that he sometimes exhibits. ]
The days are long and you seem restless. Perhaps the both of could benefit if you care to offer up some of your free time for trade.
no subject
Shifting to sit up a little more, the young mercenary will scoot himself up into a less slouched sitting position now, seemingly more attentive. Is the other asking for him to go on some kind of mission? Or does he want something, maybe hope Ajax can take a hint and understand? ]
Sure. Do you need something, then?
[ he's not just giving him the blade for fun, right? He seems hesitant to take it but he'll slowly reach out for it if Morax doesn't retract as he does so. ]
